Electronic Equipment Recycling

Electronic Waste, e-waste or e-scrap describes loosely discarded, surplus, obsolete or broken electronic devices or components. Electronic Waste Recycling (E-Cycling) means the recovery of such materials destined for disposal and diverts them for reuse, resale, component salvages or scrap recovery.

Electronic equipments destined for reuse or resale can be working or non-working but repairable equipments that can still have useful life. Components Salvage means the recovery of working or non-working but repairable components, saved from destruction or harm. These components are destined for re-use or resale as well.

Most of the obsolete or discarded electronics are processed for scrap recovery, where materials like copper, steel and plastic can be marketable commodities.

Why Recycle Electronics

  • To conserve natural resources - Valuable material can be recovered and reused!
  • To comply with local and federal regulations - Businesses are liable for any mismanagement of their waste even after it leaves their control.
  • To protect public health and the environment - Most electronics contain hazardous materials that should not be disposed of in landfills.
  • To support the community - Donating your old electronics supports schools, low-income families, and non-profits by providing needed electronics.
  • To create local jobs - As demand for electronics recycling increases, existing companies will grow.

What a generator needs to know

When there is no further use for electronic equipments, due to obsolete or non-working conditions, they can be considered as waste. Government regulations encourage responsible recycling instead of waste disposal.

Be aware that businesses are liable for any mismanagement of their waste even after it leaves their control. It is much more expensive to be a party to a cleanup than to pay to properly recycle the waste. If you are identified as the source of an abandoned waste, you will be a responsible party in the cleanup. Be suspicious of bargains. A legitimate company, who must cover their own costs, will certainly cost more than a collector who intends to collect and abandon the waste.
